  Motion tracking of thorax kinematics can be used to determine respiration. However, determining a minimal sensor configuration from 64 candidate sensor locations is associated with high computational costs. Hence, a hierarchical optimization method was proposed to determine the optimal combination of sensors. The hierarchical method was assessed by its ability to quickly determine the sensor combination that will yield optimal modelled tidal volume compared to body plethysmograph measurements. This method was able to find the optimal sensor combinations, in approximately 2% of the estimated time required by an exhaustive search.

  Due to the drift of low-cost micro-electro-mechanical systems sensors and recursive computation, pedestrian tracking based on foot-mounted inertial sensors suffers from accumulative velocity and position errors. The well-known approach named zero velocity update (ZUPT) is able to minimize such errors by resetting the velocity to zero when the foot does not move with respect to ground. This time duration is called the still phase of a stride and can be detected by comparing the actual sensor data with a pre-defined threshold. However, when the velocity increases or decreases, the fixed threshold may be too small or too big for the correct detection of the still phase. Based on our previous study, this paper presents a novel adaptive ZUPT approach using an additional chest-attached accelerometer for consistent removal of accumulative errors even if the velocity changes. The information extracted from the chest acceleration is used to update corresponding threshold for the still-phase detection, and, hence, to determine error-free velocity and position information. The experimental results show that the accurate tracking trajectory can still be successfully obtained even if the velocity changes rapidly during the experiment.

  In this paper we present a novel indoor localization system to track the emergency responders using landmarks network. The low-power landmarks are small and cost-efficient and can be integrated into the building infrastructure, such as smoke detectors with very long operation duration thanks to radio wake-up technology. During the sleep mode the landmarks consumes only 66 {\$}{\$}{\backslash}upmu {\$}{\$}W and can maintain its operation up to 5 years. The positioning is achieved by combining the either the radio strength or UWB travel time and IMU based dead reckoning to overcome the disadvantages such as error due to multipath propagation and sensor drift. The experimental results show that the proposed system using either radio strength or radio travel time based ranging is able to outperform both standalone systems and meanwhile maintain the low power consumption.

  In this work, we propose a single and multiband chirp signals for communication in the air and underwater channel. A Raspberry Pi based transceiver system and MATLAB are used for the demodulation of the chirp signals. The experiments, for both air and water, are conducted in static conditions, that is the transmitter and receiver are fixed. To increase the efficiency of signal processing, down-conversion or bandpass sampling is implemented on the receiver side. We use transmission bands between 60~kHz and 70kHz to reduce the impact of divers' communication on the maritime ecosystem and its natural communication bands. The structure of the demodulation is discussed in detail with focus on the frame detection and decision algorithm. In several different settings, we demonstrate the performance of this approach and transmit data of up to 12 Byte with data rates of 100 and 200 bit/s over 0.25 m in air and 4.5 m in water inside a highly echoic environment.

  We present a modified indoor localization system and the research into localization of divers utilizing acoustic chirp signals. The ASSIST infrastructure is used, which implements TCP/IP-based time synchronization for receiver nodes, timestamping of received chirps and server-side localization. Modifications of the original system are shown, as the transmission of signals at higher frequency and operation with high impedance transducers for the water channel. The results of position measurements in an indoor test pool as well as a small lake are shown to verify the systems functionality and investigate different multipath environments.

  In this paper we present a novel IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) based indoor localization system assisted by a fuzzy inference system (FIS). The positioning is achieved by simply applying double integration to the acceleration data. And the accumulative position errors are eliminated by using FIS based acceleration restriction. In this way, the system can be used for general cases without any scenario and condition limitations. By considering smartphone as the IMU, it is also possible to realize applications such as navigation in the supermarket or guiding blind people through buildings. Indoor experiment has been carried out to verify the benefit of FIS based acceleration restriction. The experimental results show that the proposed new system is able to follow the true trajectory and achieve a tracking accuracy improvement of 84% in comparison to the one without FIS based acceleration restriction.
